NHL Power Plays 1/10/17
Hey Vicesquad! Tuesday nights are usually full slates for NHL, and tonight is no different with a solid seven game slate with some real nice contests out there. There is only one team that is playing on a back to back night and that is the Dallas Stars. Let’s dig in and see if we can find you a play or two to take down that big GPP.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, I’ll be in our premium Slack chat and on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

Back end of a back to back
Third game in four nights *
Brayden Schenn – PHI @ BUF – $6,000
Schenn should get the benefit from playing on the third line for the Flyers and he should see either the depth matchups or the Eichel line tonight, which isn’t worrisome on the defensive side. Schenn’s shot volume has been a tad inconsistent but he is still averaging four shots on net in his last four games. The Sabres are allowing the second most shots on net in January, giving up 34.3 shots per game. Buffalo is also sporting the second worst penalty kill in the league with a low 74.4% kill rate. Schenn gets to play on the top power play unit and even strength with Wayne Simmonds, and this could be a great game stack with fireworks to ensue.
Ryan O’Reilly – BUF vs PHI – $5,600
O’Reilly is riding a two game point streak and he has multiple points in both. His price on DK is too cheap to ignore for his potential tonight. As I previously stated, this game could be a high scoring game and these are the lines I’m looking to get in my lineups. Philadelphia is giving up three goals a game in January and their penalty kill is middle of the road. Giroux hasn’t been playing well lately and Voracek is weaker defensively, so O’Reilly and Okposo should have plenty of opportunities tonight.
Ryan Kesler – ANH vs DAL – $6,900
The Ducks have won three out of their last four games and they are missing their top player Ryan Getlzaf, but he might be back tonight so we have to watch the news. Anaheim’s power play has gone a little dry, but tonight is a game to get right, as the Stars have given up two power play goals in each of their last four games. A lot of that has to do with Jordie Benn being out as he is a big part of the penalty kill. Benn might be back tonight also so keep an eye on late news. Kesler is still averaging three shots on net per game over his last seven.
Ryan Johansen – NSH vs VAN – $5,500
Johansen gets a nice matchup tonight at home against the Canucks. Vancouver is giving up 30 shots on net per game, and they are ranked 25th in Scoring chances against per 60 with just barely shy of nine SCA/60. The Canucks are also a bottom ten team in penalty kill with a 80.3% kill rate. If you want to save a little money you can look to the next guy in this article.
Mike Fisher – NSH vs VAN – $4,700
Fisher loves playing at the Bridgestone Arena as he has 15 points in his 17 games played. He isn’t a guy that shoots a ton but he is a solid distributor, and with the Preds being banged up with injuries Fisher has stepped up.
Patrick Kane – CHI vs DET – $7,700
Kaner is starting to hit a hot streak with a three game point streak and two of them are multiple points. Detroit has had issues keeping the puck out of their net as they have had sub par goaltending, and Kane is an elite sniper that can take advantage of them. The Red Wings are the 21st ranked team in goals against as they are giving up 2.9 goals against per game. This rivalry has gone back for decades and Kane shows up at home as he has twice as many points at the U.C than he does on the road.
David Backes – BOS @ STL – $5,100
Since Backes has come back from his concussion two games ago, he has scored a goal each game. He is logging solid minutes and he gets time on the second power play unit. Over his last two games he has also had three shots on net in each game. St Louis is usually known for their solid defensive play but this year they have been extremely inconsistent and their goaltending has let them down a lot. Boston could pose a lot of trouble tonight for the Blues and the second line is where im looking.
Andreas Athanasiou – DET @ CHI – $4,100
Andreas is riding a nice little hot streak playing alongside Thomas Vanek as he has five points in his last two games. Athanasiou has also been firing the puck without hesitation lately and that’s what we want when we look for value plays is consistency in shots. The Hawks are a tough matchup but their penalty kill is weak and Chicago also gives up the sixth most scoring chances per 60 with nine. Athanasiou shouldn’t have to worry about taking on the Toews line, as they should be shutting down the Zetterberg line tonight so I’m taking a shot against the Hawks and their weak penalty kill.
Ryan Hartman – CHI vs DET – $4,100
Hartman had the benefit of a hat trick last game vs the Predators even though two of the goals were empty netters. Hartman gets a bump in value because he is playing alongside two elite players in the likes of Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. When you play alongside guys that are elite it opens up ice space and gives Hartman a lot of good opportunities. Hartman has had four shots on net in his last two games and should be able to get some fired off tonight too.
Patrick Maroon – EDM vs SJ – $4,800
Maroon is another guy that is benefiting from being on a line with massive firepower as he plays alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Maroon has 15 shots in his last four games, and he is logging solid minutes. The sharks are a tough matchup but playign with such elite linemates maroon should have plenty of opportunities.
Rasmus Ristolainen – BUF vs PHI – $5,300
Risto hasn’t had a problem shooting the puck lately with seven shots in his last two games. He also blocks a lot of shots, and tonight he should get plenty of rubber to fend off against the Flyers. He is logging massive minutes of ice time and he logs almost every power play the Sabres get. He isn’t cheap but he is worth it tonight.
Duncan Keith – CHI vs DET – $5,200
Keith doesn’t score or shoot a ton but he is an assist king. He has eight points in his last ten games, and he is also logging massive minutes. Keith doesn’t think twice when it comes to blocking shots either. If im paying up for defense tonight, Keith will be high on my radar.
Mattais Ekholm – NSH vs STL – $3,800
Ekholm is logging massive minutes for the Preds as they are riddled with injuries. He is also seeing time on the top power play. Ekholm has seven points in his last ten games and at his price he makes for an absolute steal. He will get you a shot or two and he also blocks plenty of shots to pay off his salary, and tonight’s matchup against the Canucks is a great place to play him.
Corey Crawford – CHI vs DET – $8,400
Crawford at home is 9-2-3 with a 2.06GAA and a .933 save %. Crawford is very comfortable at home and he should get plenty of offense tonight to get him the win, and I am expecting enough shots on goal his way to make him a top goalie tonight.
Anders Nilsson – BUF vs PHI – $7,300 (GPP only & needs confirmation)
Nilsson has been solid at home as a spot starter with a record of 4-1-1 sporting a 1.97GAA and a .942 save%. He is going to see tons of rubber tonight and if he can get the win he could be the top value of the night.
