NHL Power Plays 1/2/17
NHL Power Plays 1/2/17
Short slates can be a bit of a pain for everyone. The goal of this article is to highlight and summarize the potential plays so we can focus our salary cap resources on a specific set of players.
There are three games on Monday so let’s get cracking on what happened last night then look forward to tonight. This will be fast as most sites are focusing on the two game night slate (due to weather uncertainty in Winter Classic).
What Went Wrong?
Sadly, if you thought Washington and Ottawa would be high scoring, you would have been wrong. That turned out to be the lowest scoring game of the slate because of one simple premise. They play too much alike. The game stack was Detroit’s first line and Toronto’s Auston Matthews line. Most did not see that coming and that tilted some slates. It turned out Steve Mason and Jared Coreau were duds as expected.
What Went Right?
Hey, there was some scoring at least! Like we talked about above, it was fun to see Detroit’s first line led by Anthony Mantha rally back in the third period. There was also John Gibson who stopped 50 shots and got the win against Philadelphia. Gibson was a 50-50 play at best but no one expected Anaheim to play so poorly at home. The Flyers’ two man forecheck destroyed the Corey Perry line all night. Yet, Gibson and Ryan Kesler’s hat trick saved the evening. It also featured alleged “goalie time out” for being overworked. The night had a little of everything and DFS players were legitimately baffled on Sunday. Who could blame them? Here is the schedule for Monday.

|Boston||New Jersey||7:00 PM|

Quick Plays (DraftKings and FanDuel pricing is used)
Travis Zajac – $5000 / $4700- NJD vs BOS
Zajac is an iffy GPP play and cash idea on Monday. That is because Zajac has flu like symptoms and is a game time decision. New Jersey was pummeled on Saturday by Washington which had to be an embarrassment. Zajac will be centering the top line if he plays. However, if he does not then pivoting to Adam Henrique will be prudent. It’s the kind of night where little is safe.
Patrice Bergeron — $6100 / $6400- BOS vs NJ
Bergeron is a solid GPP play on Monday as top lines often have success against New Jersey lately whether it is on the road or at home. New Jersey is allowing 3.04 goals per game now which is frightening considering where they were after a month. The center has goals in two straight games with 11 shots on goal. It will be an intriguing night in Newark.
Taylor Hall — $6300 / $7000- NJ vs BOS
Hall will not be huge chalk on Monday but is still a viable tournament play given the GPP structure for DraftKings and FanDuel. The money is more in the two game night slate. The forward has 23 points in 27 games but will he be 100% tonight. That is the risk one has to take on a slate like this. Wait until warm-ups to see how he looks before making a decision. Hall’s speed could wreak havoc on Boston’s defense.
Gabriel Landeskog — $4600 / $5600- COL vs VAN
Landeskog will be a low owned tournament option on Monday against Toronto because so many have soured on him due to his early season performance (11 points in 26 games). He has three plus shots on goal in two of his last three contests. It is not much to go on but Colorado at least has eight road wins. They actually play much better on the road than at home. There are pivots to Jayson Megna or Sven Baertschi from Vancouver for cheaper options.
Torey Krug — $5400 / $5800- BOS vs NJD
Krug has nice point potential against a New Jersey team that just bleeds goals no matter who is in net. If New Jersey plays its system like they have been then Boston has a good chance of scoring three goals or more. The concern is he has one goal on 113 shots! However, he has assists in five straight contests. Six is not out of the question here.
Tyson Barrie — $4600 / $5000- COL vs VAN
This is an excellent cash or GPP play on DraftKings. Consider that the defenseman is getting more than enough power play ice time. His price is too attractive to pass up on the day like this. He has points in three straight contests and though the goals are not there, at least some parts of his games are returning. This has been a lost season for Colorado but Barrie has seven points in his last nine outings on 32 shots on goal.
Tuukka Rask — $8100 / $8900- BOS vs NJD
Rask is a slight risk at GPP and cash on Monday. The problem is that Boston tends to play down to their competition. The goalie has won three of their last four while exceeding value easily. New Jersey may not generate a ton of shot volume around 25-27 shots according to projections. There will be many that move over to Vancouver’s goaltender.
If for whatever reason, you are a little queasy on Rask then wait a little closer to confirmations. Tonight’s a night where one could even go Cory Schneider or Ryan Miller/Jakob Markstrom once more but will they get the W? That is quite a question. This is the type of slate where risk could be rewarded with the right mix of chalk plays. There will be tons of danger wherever you may go tonight. Also, on social media we will have our early game predictions.
There will be lots more on Twitter as always. Do not be afraid to ask the tough or the easy questions. You can follow me @ChrisWasselDFS and good luck with today and tonight!
